Types and applications of corrugated plastic sheet

Corrugated sheets, typically referring to PP Corrugated sheets, are also known as Wantong sheets. Corrugated sheets are manufactured by extruding a mixture of polypropylene and polyethylene through a production line.

Due to their lattice-like cross-section, they are also called lattice Corrugated sheets and are a lightweight (Corrugated-structured) new type of material.

PP Corrugated sheets come in a wide variety of colors, and their thickness is adjustable. For example, the thickness range for certain brands of PP Corrugated sheets is 2–10 mm, while sheets from some foreign manufacturers can reach up to 12 mm in thickness.

The material composition of PP Corrugated sheets ensures they are non-toxic, pollution-free, corrosion-resistant, waterproof, and shock-resistant. 

Some manufacturers can incorporate flame-retardant masterbatch according to specific requirements to produce flame-retardant Corrugated sheets for applications with high fire safety standards, such as Christmas decorations and outdoor billboards in windy areas; 

By adding UV-resistant masterbatch, they can produce anti-aging and UV-resistant PP Corrugated sheets suitable for greenhouse roof construction;

In China, they are primarily used for industrial product transport crates, including standard PP Corrugated sheets, anti-static PP Corrugated sheets (with surface resistance ranging from 10⁹ to 10¹¹ Ω), anti-static PP Corrugated sheets (with surface resistance ranging from 10⁶ to 10⁹ Ω), and conductive Corrugated sheets (with surface resistance ranging from 10³ to 10⁶ Ω).

As a new type of eco-friendly material, Corrugated sheets do not generate dust during use, have a long service life, and are recyclable.

 Furthermore, Corrugated sheets are lightweight, offer flexible dimensions, have high toughness, and are relatively low-cost, gradually replacing paper corrugated boards.

Types of Corrugated Sheets

There are many structural types of Corrugated sheets; below is a brief introduction to the commonly used sheets.

1. Honeycomb Structure

Double-layer honeycomb sheets are also available on the market. With superior comprehensive properties such as compressive strength and flexural strength, they are expected to become the mainstream material in the future.

Suitable for both liners and outer boxes: For liners, thicknesses generally under 5 mm and basis weights up to 1,200 g/m² are most common; for large plastic pallet boxes, thicknesses of 10 mm or more (around 12 mm) and basis weights of 3,000–3,500 g/m² are typically used.

2. H-shaped Structure The market also offers curved “H-shaped” structures resembling an “S.” Currently, H-shaped sheets are the most common type on the market, primarily used for liners and small to medium-sized Corrugated boxes. 

Thicknesses between 2–7 mm are most commonly used, with basis weights typically ranging from 300–1800 g (basis weight and thickness are selected based on actual design requirements).

3. M-Type Structure: The market also offers “double M-type structures” (resembling the Chinese character for “rice”). This structure is primarily used for outer boxes, with thicknesses of 10 mm or more (around 12 mm) and a basis weight of approximately 3,000 g.

4. X-Type Structure: This structure is primarily used for outer boxes, with a thickness of 10 mm or more (around 12 mm) and a weight of approximately 3,000 g.

Advantages of Plastic Corrugated Sheets

1. Excellent Mechanical Properties: The unique structure of plastic Corrugated sheets provides them with good toughness, impact resistance, high compressive strength, cushioning properties, high hardness, and excellent bending performance.

2. Lightweight and Material-Efficient: Plastic Corrugated sheets offer excellent mechanical properties. For equivalent performance, they consume less material, are lighter in weight, and have lower production costs.

3. Insulation: Most Corrugated sheets feature a Corrugated plastic structure, providing significantly better sound insulation than solid sheets, along with effective thermal insulation.

4. Wide variety of types: Available in anti-static, conductive, flame-retardant, modified blends, and surface-coated varieties. These options allow plastic Corrugated sheets to possess anti-static, conductive, and flame-retardant properties.

5. Stable chemical properties: Plastic Corrugated sheets offer advantages such as water resistance, moisture resistance, corrosion resistance, insect resistance, and fumigation-free properties, providing significant advantages over cardboard and wood sheets.

6. Smooth and Aesthetic Surface: By adding color masterbatches, the sheets can be customized into various colors. They feature a smooth surface, a full range of colors, and are easy to print on. 

7. Significant Environmental Benefits: Plastic Corrugated sheets are non-toxic and pollution-free. Waste disposal is simple, causing no environmental pollution, and they can be recycled into other plastic products.


Applications of PP Plastic Corrugated Boards

1. Corrugated boards serve as an ideal eco-friendly alternative to corrugated cardboard, wooden boards, and metal sheets.

2. Transport crates, component transport crates, food transport crates, beverage transport crates, packaging boxes, packaging for precision instruments, as well as cushioning boards, dividers, and transport/storage crates for electronic components.

3. Industrial sheets: protective outer packaging for various items; padding, shelving, dividers, base plates, and cross-bracing sheets.

4. Electronic industry packaging: Conductive plastic packaging products are primarily used for packaging electronic components to prevent contact between charged items, which could cause sparks and hazards due to static friction. 

Additionally, there are conductive and anti-static plastic sheets, storage bins, and other products.

5. Advertising and Decor: Display boards, product signage, billboards, light boxes, storefront displays, etc.

6. Home Applications: Temporary room dividers, wall sheets, ceiling sheets, container lids, and floor protection during renovations.

7. Other Uses: Back sheets for washing machines, cars, water heaters, and strollers; as well as padding for packaging, storage, and transportation.

Summary

There are many things in our daily lives that we cannot do without, and Corrugated sheets are one of them. Some people might think that since these sheets cannot be eaten or worn, they are too far removed from our daily lives.

In fact, while the material of Corrugated sheets may not seem directly related to us at first glance, a closer look reveals that we rely on this type of panel everywhere in our daily lives.
